Gauss's law — flux through the rest of the surface

A Gaussian surface SS is drawn enclosing a charge distribution of net positive charge as shown in the figure.

If the electric flux through the portion of the surface marked as AA is −ψ (ψ>0)-\psi\ (\psi > 0), which of the following is true regarding the electric flux ψR\psi_R through the rest of the Gaussian surface?

  1. (1) ψR=−ψ\psi_R = -\psi
  2. (2) ψR=+ψ\psi_R = +\psi
  3. (3) ψR<−ψ\psi_R < -\psi
  4. (4) ψR<+ψ\psi_R < +\psi
  5. (5) ψR>+ψ\psi_R > +\psi
Answer and explanation

Answer: (5) ψR>+ψ\psi_R > +\psi

Given information

We know: a net positive charge QQ is inside the closed surface SS.

The flux through the part AA is −ψ-\psi. The minus sign means the flux comes in through AA.

To see it with numbers, take

ψ=1,  Qε0=2\psi = 1,\; \frac{Q}{\varepsilon_0} = 2

What the question asks

AA and the rest together make the whole surface SS.

So their two fluxes add up to the total flux of SS.

We want to compare ψR\psi_R with ψ\psi.

Relevant theory

The total normal electric flux crossing a closed surface of any shape surrounding a charge Q situated in a medium of permittivity

For the sake of convenience, it is considered that the electric field intensity is the number of electric flux lines crossing normally a unit area of the field.

Required equations

ΦS=Qε0\Phi_{S} = \frac{Q}{\varepsilon_0}

ΦS=(−ψ)+ψR\Phi_S = (-\psi) + \psi_R

Applying it to this question

Flux going out of the surface is positive.

Flux coming in is negative.

So the −ψ-\psi through AA is flux coming in.

The charge inside is positive. So the total flux out of SS is positive.

ΦS=Qε0>0\Phi_S = \frac{Q}{\varepsilon_0} > 0

Set this equal to the flux of AA plus the flux of the rest.

Reasoning and calculation

−ψ+ψR=Qε0-\psi + \psi_R = \frac{Q}{\varepsilon_0}

ψR=ψ+Qε0\psi_R = \psi + \frac{Q}{\varepsilon_0}

ψR>+ψ\psi_R > +\psi

Checks

psi+qepspsi + q_eps

Check with field lines.

The lines that come in through AA must go out somewhere else.

The lines from the charge inside also go out.

Both go out through the rest. So the flux there is more than ψ\psi.

Conclusion

ψR=ψ+Qε0>ψ\psi_R = \psi + \frac{Q}{\varepsilon_0} > \psi

ψR=ψ+Qε0\psi_R = \psi + \frac{Q}{\varepsilon_0}

Here Q>0Q > 0. So ψR>+ψ\psi_R > +\psi.

The answer is option (5).
