Power dissipated by an unknown resistor network

In the figure shown, Z\boxed{Z} represents a network consisting of resistors of unknown values. If the internal resistance of the voltage source is negligible, the power dissipated by the network is

  1. (1) 60 mW
  2. (2) 90 mW
  3. (3) 120 mW
  4. (4) 150 mW
  5. (5) 180 mW
Answer and explanation

Answer: (5) 180 mW

Given information

The source is E=10E = 10 V. Its internal resistance is negligible.

The current is I=20I = 20 mA, which is 0.020.02 A.

A 50 Ω50\ \Omega resistor is in series with ZZ. We do not know what is inside ZZ.

What the question asks

We want: the power dissipated in ZZ.

We do not need the resistance of ZZ. The voltage across it and the current through it are enough.

Relevant theory

Passive resistors are those resistors in which the electrical energy flowing through them gets completely converted into heat.

This means that the electric charges flow without getting collected at any point or a junction of a circuit.

Required equations

VR=IRV_R = IR

E=VZ+VRE = V_Z + V_R

PZ=VZIP_Z = V_Z I

Applying it to this question

11

VR=0.02×50V_R = 0.02 \times 50

99

VZ=10−1V_Z = 10 - 1

Reasoning and calculation

PZ=VZI=9×0.02P_Z = V_Z I = 9 \times 0.02

0.180.18

PZ=0.18P_Z = 0.18

180180

PZ=0.18×1000P_Z = 0.18 \times 1000

ZZ has 99 V across it and 2020 mA through it. So it dissipates 180180 mW. That matches option (5).

Checks

(E−I∗R)∗I∗1000(E - I * R) * I * 1000

0.20.2

P=EI=10×0.02P = EI = 10 \times 0.02

0.020.02

PR=I2R=0.022×50P_R = I^2 R = 0.02^2 \times 50

0.180.18

PZ=0.2−0.02P_Z = 0.2 - 0.02

Volts times amperes gives watts.

0.18 W=180 mW0.18\ \text{W} = 180\ \text{mW}

The options are in mW too.

The source gives 200200 mW in all. The resistor takes 2020 mW.

So ZZ gets 180180 mW. That makes sense.

Conclusion

PZ=9×0.02=0.18 WP_Z = 9 \times 0.02 = 0.18\ \text{W}

VZ=9V_Z = 9 V and I=20I = 20 mA.

PZ=9×0.02=0.18 W=180 mWP_Z = 9 \times 0.02 = 0.18\ \text{W} = 180\ \text{mW}

The answer is option (5).

For a box you cannot see inside, do not look for its resistance.

Find the voltage across it and the current through it. Then use P=VIP = VI.
