An ideal gas along two paths: the change in internal energy

An ideal gas expands from state AA to state CC along two different paths, ABCABC and ADCADC, as shown in the PP-VV diagram. The heat absorbed by the gas during the processes ABAB and BCBC are 200 J200\ \text{J} and 700 J700\ \text{J}, respectively. What is the change in internal energy, when the gas expands along the path ADCADC?

  1. (1) 380 J
  2. (2) 520 J
  3. (3) 720 J
  4. (4) 880 J
  5. (5) 1080 J
Answer and explanation

Answer: (3) 720 J

Given information

We know:

AA has pressure 2×1042 \times 10^4 Pa and volume 3×10−3 m33 \times 10^{-3}\ \text{m}^3.

BB has pressure 6×1046 \times 10^4 Pa and volume 3×10−3 m33 \times 10^{-3}\ \text{m}^3.

CC has pressure 6×1046 \times 10^4 Pa and volume 6×10−3 m36 \times 10^{-3}\ \text{m}^3.

DD has pressure 2×1042 \times 10^4 Pa and volume 6×10−3 m36 \times 10^{-3}\ \text{m}^3.

The heat in ABAB is QAB=200Q_{AB} = 200 J. The heat in BCBC is QBC=700Q_{BC} = 700 J.

What the question asks

We want:

The change in internal energy ΔUADC\Delta U_{ADC} along the path ADCADC.

Relevant theory

The first law:

ΔQ=ΔU+ΔW\Delta Q = \Delta U + \Delta W

The internal energy depends only on the start and the end. It does not depend on the path.

The work done by the gas is the area under the PP–VV graph.

At constant pressure W=PΔVW = P\Delta V. At constant volume W=0W = 0.

In a system, if the net exchange of heat is ∆Q, the change of internal energy is ∆U and the amount of work done is ∆W then, ∆ Q = ∆U + ∆W

Required equations

ΔU=ΔQ−ΔW\Delta U = \Delta Q - \Delta W

W=P ΔVW = P\,\Delta V

Applying it to this question

The plan.

ΔU\Delta U does not depend on the path.

So find ΔU\Delta U from AA to CC along ABCABC, where the heats are known.

That is also the answer for ADCADC.

Reasoning and calculation

00

WAB=0W_{AB} = 0

200200

ΔUAB=200−0\Delta U_{AB} = 200 - 0

180180

WBC=6×104×(6−3)×10−3W_{BC} = 6 \times 10^4 \times (6 - 3) \times 10^{-3}

520520

ΔUBC=700−180\Delta U_{BC} = 700 - 180

720720

ΔUAC=200+520\Delta U_{AC} = 200 + 520

ΔUADC=ΔUABC\Delta U_{ADC} = \Delta U_{ABC}

Checks

Check the units.

Pa×m3=N m−2×m3=N m=J\text{Pa} \times \text{m}^3 = \text{N m}^{-2} \times \text{m}^3 = \text{N m} = \text{J}.

Every work term is in joules.

Does it make sense?

On ADCADC the work is only WAD=2×104×3×10−3=60W_{AD} = 2 \times 10^4 \times 3 \times 10^{-3} = 60 J.

So the heat on this path is 720+60=780720 + 60 = 780 J.

That is less than the 900 J on ABCABC, because the gas does less work.

ΔU\Delta U is 720 J on both paths.

Qab+Qbc−P∗dVQab + Qbc - P * dV

Conclusion

ΔU=720 J\Delta U = 720\ \text{J}

ΔUAC=200+(700−180)=720\Delta U_{AC} = 200 + (700 - 180) = 720 J.

Internal energy does not depend on the path.

So it is also 720 J along ADCADC.

The answer is option (3).

Thinking that it cannot be found because the heat on the path ADCADC is not given.

Internal energy depends only on the start and the end. The ΔU\Delta U found on one path is true for every path.
