A square-wave voltage: the average power in a load

Consider the circuit shown in the figure. The graphs show the waveforms of the applied voltage and the current through the load LL.

The average power dissipation of the load is

  1. (1) 00
  2. (2) VmIm4\frac{V_mI_m}{4}
  3. (3) Vm2Im2\frac{V_m}{\sqrt{2}}\frac{I_m}{\sqrt{2}}
  4. (4) VmImV_mI_m
  5. (5) 2VmIm2V_mI_m
Answer and explanation

Answer: (2) VmIm4\frac{V_mI_m}{4}

What the question asks

We want:

The average power in the load over one period.

We use the graphs of V(t)V(t) and I(t)I(t).

Reading the options

The options are different fractions of VmImV_mI_m.

We work out the energy in one period from the graphs.

Then we compare.

Relevant theory

At every moment the power is P=VIP = VI.

The average power over one period TT is the area under the VIVI graph divided by TT.

Pˉ=1T∫0TVI dt\bar P = \dfrac{1}{T}\int_0^T VI\,dt

Passive resistors are those resistors in which the electrical energy flowing through them gets completely converted into heat.

Required equations

P(t)=V(t) I(t)P(t) = V(t)\,I(t)

Pˉ=1T∫0TP dt\bar P = \frac{1}{T}\int_0^T P\,dt

Reasoning and calculation

The axes:

Across in both graphs: the time tt. TT is one period.

Top: VV from −Vm-V_m to +Vm+V_m.

Bottom: II from −Im-I_m to +Im+I_m.

The key points:

From 00 to T2\dfrac{T}{2}, V=+VmV = +V_m.

From T2\dfrac{T}{2} to TT, V=−VmV = -V_m.

The current is 00 from 00 to T4\dfrac{T}{4}.

From T4\dfrac{T}{4} to T2\dfrac{T}{2} it rises from 00 to ImI_m.

At T2\dfrac{T}{2} it jumps to −Im-I_m and rises to 00 at 3T4\dfrac{3T}{4}.

From 3T4\dfrac{3T}{4} to TT it is 00.

On each ramp the average current is Im2\dfrac{I_m}{2}.

Each ramp lasts T4\dfrac{T}{4}.

VmImT8\frac{V_mI_mT}{8}

E1=Vm×Im2×T4E_1 = V_m \times \frac{I_m}{2} \times \frac{T}{4}

E2=(−Vm)×(−Im2)×T4E_2 = (-V_m) \times \left(-\frac{I_m}{2}\right) \times \frac{T}{4}

E=VmImT4E = \frac{V_mI_mT}{4}

This is the energy used in the load in one period.

In both parts VIVI is positive.

No energy flows back.

VmIm4\frac{V_mI_m}{4}

Pˉ=ET=VmIm4\bar P = \frac{E}{T} = \frac{V_mI_m}{4}

Checks

Unit check:

VmImV_mI_m has the unit extVimesextA=extWext{V} imes ext{A} = ext{W}.

Energy ÷ time has the unit extJ exts−1=extWext{J}\, ext{s}^{-1} = ext{W}.

Vm∗Im/4Vm * Im / 4

Conclusion

Pˉ=VmIm4\bar P = \frac{V_mI_m}{4}

Only the two parts where VIVI is positive give power.

Each gives VmImT8\dfrac{V_mI_mT}{8}.

In one period that is VmImT4\dfrac{V_mI_mT}{4}.

The average is VmIm4\dfrac{V_mI_m}{4}.

So the answer is option (2).
