A symmetric network: the current through the battery

What is the current through the battery of the circuit shown in the figure?

  1. (1) V8R\frac{V}{8R}
  2. (2) V4R\frac{V}{4R}
  3. (3) V2R\frac{V}{2R}
  4. (4) VR\frac{V}{R}
  5. (5) 2VR\frac{2V}{R}
Answer and explanation

Answer: (4) VR\frac{V}{R}

What the question asks

We want:

The total current II through the battery.

The diamond network is joined across the battery VV.

Given information

The nodes:

AA is the left corner, at potential VV.

CC is the right corner, at 00.

OO is the centre, TT the top, BB the bottom.

On the left inside are PP (upper) and QQ (lower). On the right are P′P^{\prime} and Q′Q^{\prime}.

The resistors:

AA–PP, AA–OO and AA–QQ are each RR.

PP–OO is 2R2R.

PP–TT is 4R4R.

PP–P′P^{\prime} is 8R8R.

The right side and the bottom are the same.

Relevant theory

Junction rule: the currents into a node are the currents out of it.

Symmetry tells us which nodes are at the same potential.

That makes the network simple.

The algebraic sum of the currents flowing across a junction of a circuit is zero

Reasoning and calculation

The shape:

Three paths leave AA, to PP, OO and QQ.

Three paths reach CC, from P′P^{\prime}, OO and Q′Q^{\prime}.

The top TT and the bottom BB are joined by 4R4R resistors.

The 8R8R resistors are between PP and P′P^{\prime}, and between QQ and Q′Q^{\prime}.

The symmetry:

Left and right are mirror images, with VV and 00 swapped. So OO, TT and BB on the middle line are all at V2\dfrac{V}{2}.

Up and down are the same. So VP=VQ=xV_P = V_Q = x and VP′=VQ′=V−xV_{P^{\prime}} = V_{Q^{\prime}} = V - x.

Nodes at the same potential:

OO, TT and BB at V2\dfrac{V}{2}.

PP and QQ at xx.

P′P^{\prime} and Q′Q^{\prime} at V−xV - x.

So we have only one unknown, xx, not six.

What we can leave out:

The potential of OO, TT and BB is already known. We need no equation for them.

The equations at QQ, P′P^{\prime} and Q′Q^{\prime} copy the one at PP.

So one junction rule at PP is enough.

8(V−x)+2(V2−x)+(V−2x)+4(V2−x)=08(V - x) + 2\left(\frac{V}{2} - x\right) + \left(V - 2x\right) + 4\left(\frac{V}{2} - x\right) = 0

12V−16x=012V - 16x = 0

3V4\frac{3V}{4}

x=3V4x = \frac{3V}{4}

V4R\frac{V}{4R}

V−3V/4R\frac{V - 3V/4}{R}

V2R\frac{V}{2R}

V−V/2R\frac{V - V/2}{R}

Required equations

I=V4R+V4R+V2RI = \frac{V}{4R} + \frac{V}{4R} + \frac{V}{2R}

I=VRI = \frac{V}{R}

Reading the options

I=VRI = \dfrac{V}{R}.

That is option (4).

The whole network works like one resistor RR.

Checks

V/RV / R

Check:

The current into PP is V4R\dfrac{V}{4R}.

Out of PP: to OO it is V/42R=V8R\dfrac{V/4}{2R} = \dfrac{V}{8R}.

To TT it is V/44R=V16R\dfrac{V/4}{4R} = \dfrac{V}{16R}.

To P′P^{\prime} it is V/28R=V16R\dfrac{V/2}{8R} = \dfrac{V}{16R}.

The total is V4R\dfrac{V}{4R}, so it matches.

Conclusion

I=VRI = \frac{V}{R}

By symmetry OO is at V2\dfrac{V}{2}. PP and QQ are at 3V4\dfrac{3V}{4}.

From AA the currents are V4R+V4R+V2R=VR\dfrac{V}{4R} + \dfrac{V}{4R} + \dfrac{V}{2R} = \dfrac{V}{R}.

So the answer is option (4).
