A prism — statements about the angle of minimum deviation D

A narrow monochromatic beam of light passes through a prism in air. Consider the following statements about the angle of minimum deviation DD.

(A) DD increases as the refractive index of the material of the prism increases.

(B) DD first decreases and then increases as the angle of incidence is gradually increased.

(C) DD increases as the angle of the prism increases.

Of the above statements,

  1. (1) only (A) is true.
  2. (2) only (A) and (B) are true.
  3. (3) only (A) and (C) are true.
  4. (4) only (B) and (C) are true.
  5. (5) all of (A), (B), (C) are true.
Answer and explanation

Answer: (3) only (A) and (C) are true.

What the question asks

Which of the three statements are true? Note that the statements are about the minimum deviation DD — not the general deviation dd.

Relevant theory

It can be shown that, when the angle of incidence is increased starting from a small value, the emergent ray first moves in such a direction as to decrease the angle of deviation. Then it reaches a position where the deviation is minimum and then turns back to move in the direction of increasing the angle of deviation.

r₁ + r₂ = A

∴ i₁ + i₂ = A + d

This is Snell's law of refraction and it holds for electro-magnetic, sound and water waves.

Core idea: the deviation dd is a function of the angle of incidence i1i_1.

DD is its minimum value — a single number for a given prism (AA, nn) and colour of light.

If a change increases dd at every angle of incidence, the minimum DD also increases.

sin⁡i1=nsin⁡r1\sin i_1 = n \sin r_1

r2=A−r1r_2 = A - r_1

sin⁡i2=nsin⁡r2\sin i_2 = n \sin r_2

d=i1+i2−Ad = i_1 + i_2 - A

Reading the options

The options are combinations of true statements: {A}, {A, B}, {A, C}, {B, C}, {A, B, C}. We judge all three, then match.

Reasoning and calculation

D increases as the refractive index of the material of the prism increases.

With AA, i1i_1 unchanged, increasing nn: sin⁡r1=sin⁡i1/n\sin r_1 = \sin i_1 / n decreases, so r2=A−r1r_2 = A - r_1 increases; both factors in sin⁡i2=nsin⁡r2\sin i_2 = n\sin r_2 increase, so i2i_2 increases; d=i1+i2−Ad = i_1 + i_2 - A increases. This holds for every i1i_1 — so the minimum of dd, which is DD, also increases.

A

D first decreases and then increases as the angle of incidence is gradually increased.

The book says: as the angle of incidence is gradually increased, the deviation first decreases, reaches a minimum, then increases. That minimum value is DD itself. So what varies with ii is dd; DD is a fixed number — it does not "first decrease and then increase".

B

D increases as the angle of the prism increases.

With nn, i1i_1 unchanged, increasing AA by ΔA\Delta A: r1r_1 stays the same, and r2=A−r1r_2 = A - r_1 increases by ΔA\Delta A. Since the ray leaves a denser medium, i2>r2i_2 > r_2; so in sin⁡i2=nsin⁡r2\sin i_2 = n\sin r_2, i2i_2 grows faster than r2r_2 (Δi2>ΔA\Delta i_2 > \Delta A). In d=i1+i2−Ad = i_1 + i_2 - A, the growth in i2i_2 outpaces the growth in AA, so dd increases — for every i1i_1; hence DD increases.

C

Why the false statement (B) is tempting: it correctly describes the book's ii–dd behaviour (Figure 9.15) — but with DD written where dd belongs. The question bolds "minimum deviation DD" exactly to flag this difference.

37.237.2

r1=30.7∘, r2=29.3∘, i2=47.2∘, dr_1 = 30.7^\circ,\ r_2 = 29.3^\circ,\ i_2 = 47.2^\circ,\ d

58.658.6

r1=26.8∘, r2=33.2∘, i2=68.6∘, dr_1 = 26.8^\circ,\ r_2 = 33.2^\circ,\ i_2 = 68.6^\circ,\ d

51.851.8

r1=30.7∘, r2=39.3∘, i2=71.8∘, dr_1 = 30.7^\circ,\ r_2 = 39.3^\circ,\ i_2 = 71.8^\circ,\ d

Numerical check (d=i1+i2−Ad = i_1 + i_2 - A, same i1=50∘i_1 = 50^\circ): 37.2∘→58.6∘37.2^\circ \to 58.6^\circ (nn up), 37.2∘→51.8∘37.2^\circ \to 51.8^\circ (AA up). Both changes increase dd — so its minimum DD increases too.

Why the other options fail

(C) is also true.

(B) is not true; (C) is missing.

(B) is not true; (A) is missing.

(B) is not true.

Conclusion

(A) and (C) are true; (B) describes the deviation dd, not DD — the answer is (3).

"Minimum deviation DD" and "deviation dd" are different. dd varies with the angle of incidence; DD varies only with the prism's nn, AA and the colour of light.
