Refracted rays from a point of an object in front of a concave lens

An object is placed in front of a concave lens as shown in the figure. The paths of the refracted rays emitting from point AA of the object are

  1. (1) PP and RR only.
  2. (2) QQ and RR only.
  3. (3) PP, RR and SS only.
  4. (4) PP, QQ and RR only.
  5. (5) All PP, QQ, RR and SS.
Answer and explanation

Answer: (4) PP, QQ and RR only.

What the question asks

Find which of the rays PP, QQ, RR and SS are refracted paths of rays from AA.

The objects in the figure are the arrow AA, a concave lens with a focus FF on each side, and four rays leaving the lens.

The plan: draw the rays from AA that we know, then see which of PP, QQ, RR, SS match.

Relevant theory

Images formed by lenses can be constructed by using two rays from the topmost point of the object, one passing parallel to the axis of the lens and the other passing through the optical centre of the lens

The midpoint of a lens through which the rays are supposed to pass without any deviation is called the "optical centre" of the lens

Applying it to this question

The rays are the interaction between AA and the lens.

Read the figure: AA is above the axis. The dashed line is the plane of the lens. The rays PP, QQ, RR, SS all start on that line.

So we ask which of them can come from AA.

Variables we can read: the height of AA above the axis, and the height at which each ray leaves the lens.

PP leaves at the height of AA. QQ leaves a little above the axis. RR leaves from the optical centre. SS leaves below the axis.

Reasoning and calculation

Take the three rays from AA.

Ray 1. A ray from AA parallel to the axis. In a concave lens it bends away from the axis, as if it came from the focus FF on the side of AA. It leaves at the height of AA and rises. That is PP.

Ray 2. A ray from AA aimed at the far focus FF. It leaves the lens parallel to the axis. It meets the lens a little above the axis. That is QQ.

Ray 3. A ray from AA through the optical centre. It goes straight on and falls below the axis. That is RR.

SS leaves the lens below the axis, on the straight line from AA. A ray that meets the lens off-centre must be bent. SS is not bent. So SS is not a path.

Reading the options

The options list which of PP, QQ, RR, SS are paths.

The rays PP, QQ and RR are paths and SS is not. That matches option (4).

Why the other options fail

QQ is also a refracted ray from AA. It comes from the ray aimed at the far focus.

PP is also a refracted ray from AA. It comes from the ray parallel to the axis.

SS is not bent, so it cannot be a refracted ray. And QQ is left out.

SS is not bent, so it cannot be a refracted ray.

Checks

Does it make sense?

Trace PP and RR back with dotted lines. They meet at one point, above the axis, between FF and the lens. That point is the image of AA.

For a concave lens the image is virtual, upright and smaller, so this is what we expect.

For all positions of the object the image is virtual, diminished, upright and forms between the focus and the lens.

Conclusion

PP is the ray parallel to the axis. QQ is the ray aimed at the far focus. RR is the ray through the optical centre.

SS is not bent, so it is not a path. The answer is (4).

For a lens, use the easy rays: parallel to the axis, through the centre, and aimed at the far focus.

Then check each drawn ray. A ray that meets the lens off-centre and is not bent cannot be right.
