The projection of a body in circular motion

An object AA moving in a circular path at a uniform angular velocity is shown in the figure. The variation of displacement (x)(x) and velocity (v)(v) of the point (P)(P) of projection of the object on the XX-axis with time (t)(t) is best represented by,

  1. (1) Graph pair (1)
  2. (2) Graph pair (2)
  3. (3) Graph pair (3)
  4. (4) Graph pair (4)
  5. (5) Graph pair (5)
Answer and explanation

Answer: (1) Graph pair (1)

What the question asks

We want: the graphs of the displacement xx and the velocity vv of PP against the time tt.

PP is the foot of the perpendicular from AA to the XX axis.

Relevant theory

The foot of the perpendicular projection (M) from the moving body on to this diameter moves from Z to C, and passing through Z again and moving to F returns to Z.

Required equations

x=Rcos⁡(ωt+φ)x = R\cos(\omega t + \varphi)

v=dxdt=−Rωsin⁡(ωt+φ)v = \dfrac{dx}{dt} = -R\omega\sin(\omega t + \varphi)

Reasoning and calculation

Where does PP start?

In the figure AA is above the XX axis and to the right of the centre.

So PP starts on the positive side. xx starts positive, not at zero.

Which way does PP go?

AA turns anticlockwise, towards the YY axis. So PP moves to the left, towards the centre.

So xx falls from its starting value. It reaches zero, goes negative to the other end, and then comes back.

Now the velocity. It is the slope of the xx-tt graph.

At first xx is falling, so vv is negative.

Where xx crosses zero going down, the slope is steepest. vv is at its most negative.

At the lowest point of xx the slope is zero. v=0v = 0.

Where xx crosses zero going up, the slope is steepest the other way. vv is at its largest positive value.

Line up the dashed lines.

Dashed line 1: x=0x = 0 going down, and vv is at its lowest.

Dashed line 2: xx is at its lowest, and v=0v = 0.

Dashed line 3: x=0x = 0 going up, and vv is at its highest.

Only the pair (1) has all of these.

Pair (2) starts at the centre. Pair (3) has vv copying xx. Pairs (4) and (5) have no changing vv.

The answer is pair (1).

Checks

x∗x+u∗ux * x + u * u

Does it make sense?

When PP is at an end of its path it stops for a moment. At those points v=0v = 0 and xx is at its largest or smallest.

When PP is at the centre it moves fastest. At those points x=0x = 0 and ∣v∣|v| is at its largest.

Conclusion

pair (1)\text{pair }(1)

xx starts positive and falls. vv is the slope of xx, so it starts negative and is zero when xx is at its lowest.

The answer is (1).

The velocity graph is the slope of the displacement graph.

Where xx is at a peak or a trough, v=0v = 0. Where xx crosses zero, ∣v∣|v| is largest.
